Jazz star mentoring next generation of musicians
International jazz sensation Jazzmeia Horn shares her musical expertise with University of Adelaide students in her new residency.
Following last year’s University of Adelaide residency, the three-time Grammy nominee has returned to campus, running a series of classes to mentor the state’s top jazz students and the next generation of South Australian musicians.
In an Australian exclusive, Horn is collaborating with DEM MOB — emerging Indigenous hip hop group and students from the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) at the University of Adelaide — and the state’s rising jazz students from the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music, to write, record and produce a new music track and video.
During her time in Adelaide, Horn is performing with the state’s top jazz students and graduating musicians for Helpmann Academy’s A Night of Jazz ˛ąłŮĚýAdelaide Town Hall which is an annual event honouring outstanding musicians from the Elder Conservatorium of Music.
“I am so excited to be in Adelaide to mentor and perform with the next generation of homegrown jazz talent,” Horn says.
“I was completely blown away by the calibre of musicians from the Elder Conservatorium of Music last year; it was such an incredible experience performing with them.
“I have loved my time so far with the students from CASM and working with DEM MOB to create something new…  I can’t wait for what this week brings”.
Professor Anna Goldsworthy, Director of Elder Conservatorium of Music, says it’s an honour to see Horn return to campus, and students will see the benefits for years to come.
“Jazzmeia had a galvanising effect on our community during her visit last year. It was an immersive, empowering and for some, transformative experience,” she says.
“We are thrilled Jazzmeia has returned in 2024, bringing her unique blend of artistry and pedagogical innovation not only to our jazz students but also to our Centre of Aboriginal Studies in Music.
“Exposure to an international artist of this calibre can have a profound impact on the career trajectory of young musicians, and we are grateful to the Helpmann Academy for this remarkable opportunity.”
Jane MacFarlane, Helpmann Academy CEO thanks all those who have supported the residency and performances.
“The Helpmann Academy A Night of Jazz event and awards night is a highlight on the calendar for us, the University of Adelaide and our philanthropic partners,” she says.Â
“We are thrilled to be partnering with the City of Adelaide this year to showcase these incredibly talented emerging and established musicians at the iconic Adelaide Town Hall.”
