  • Biography/ Background

Alison is a lecturer specialising in oncology and palliative care in the Adelaide Nursing School. Alison co-ordinates the haematology/oncology graduate diploma for registered nurses and the cancer care and palliative care nursing course for undergraduate third year students.

Prior to her appointment, Alison worked for many years as a nurse unit manager of a busy haematology/oncology ward at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. This includes her extensive practice-based cancer nursing experience working with people with cancer and caring for them throughout their journey. Alison is experienced with providing care to people having chemotherapy and cancer drug therapies, inclusive of educating patients to recognise complications and how to manage them safely.

Alison has provided state-wide training to cancer nurses regarding the safe administration of cytotoxic drugs and has worked extensively on safe policy and procedure development.

Completing her Master of Nursing Science (Oncology) in 2018, she explored the factors that influence the implementation of post opioid documentation from the perspective of registered nursing. The lived and working experience of nurses is central to all of her research.

As part of her current HDR degree, she is researching the factors that influence the perceived ability of third year nursing students to confidently engage in difficult conversations with patients who have a life limiting illness.
