  • Biography/ Background

I am a medical doctor and paediatrician, with almost 20 years of clinical experience, and a senior epidemiologist with 10 years of international experience in the design, implementation and analysis of quantitative studies (cohorts, cross-sectional studies, randomized controlled trials). For five years in Brazil, I worked as an Assistant Professor (2010-2015), where I was responsible for the development, coordination and teaching of five separate courses in the area of biostatistics, epidemiology and research methods targeting postgraduate students.

I began working as a Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow at the Discipline of General Practice in 2015 and as Head of Research (Level C) at the Adelaide Rural Clinical School in 2018. I have participated as principal investigator in two surveys conducted in South Australia (Omnibus Survey 2015 and 2017) and in another research study using data from 650 Australian General Practices and four million patients (National Prescribing Service MedicineInsight). My contributions in all these projects are reflected in the 75 papers published in the last five years (17 in ERA A/A* journals), that have achieved 1338 citations and resulted in an H-index=21 and i-10 index=47. In terms of teaching, my work as a clinician and researcher has been integrated with a deep understanding of pedagogical methods as a specialist in adult professional education. At the University of Adelaide, I have coordinated two undergraduate courses in the area of research methods and was responsible for restructuring one of them.  This redeveloped course provided students with improved practical experience in the use of statistical software, online epidemiological tools and international perspectives.

I have supervised to completion (principal supervisor) five masters (three finishing between 2014-2015), one PhD (2015) and two researchers during their postdoctoral training in research methods (2014-2017, one in Australia). I have also co-supervised six masters and six PhDs (one in Australia in 2016). I am currently supervising one PhD candidate and co-supervising other three (one at the same institution, one from Monash University and one in Brazil), and two undergraduate students during their third-year research component as part of the Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences.
