  • Biography/ Background

     

    Jim Hancock’s research interests are in the application of economics to contemporary public policy questions. He has carried out research on topics in a range of areas that include tax policy, federal financial relations, regulatory economics, programme evaluation, environmental valuations and regional economic development. Jim’s technical capabilities include application of economic theory to market design issues, econometric analysis, computable general equilibrium modelling, forecasting and a deep knowledge of Australian economic datasets and institutional structures. He has extensive experience in report writing, presentations of research findings and project planning and management. Jim has led more than 125 commissioned research studies for Commonwealth and State Government agencies, companies and NGOs. Some have been carried out alone, some involving teams of economists from within SACES and others involving multi-disciplinary teams. He has taught public finance at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and executive courses relating to cost benefit analysis and market failure assessments. In 2021 he was appointed by the Australian Energy Regulator as an expert member of its Rate of Return advisory panel. Prior to joining the University Jim worked at South Australian Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He has a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from the University of Adelaide.
