Biography/ Background
Dr Nathan Gray is Visiting Senior Fellow at the Institute for International Trade (IIT) and has 20 years’ experience providing strategic industry and policy advice to governments and NGO’s in the Asia Pacific. Nathan has extensive project experience developing international trade and investment policy advice to Governments in Australia and Asia. Nathan has worked for clients including the World Bank, APEC, DFAT, DAFF, and various State governments in Australia to develop effective trade, investment and industry development strategies. Nathan has specialised in providing economic and strategic assessments of the opportunities and challenges of international trade and investment for a range of industries including manufacturing, agriculture, health, mining, and defence. This experience includes providing advice to national and sub-national governments on government policy options on trade facilitation policy measures that can enhance export and investment engagement through trade. Dr Gray additionally has extensive experience designing, leading and delivering short capacity building professional programs including; 2024 Diplomatic Academy Trade Policy Course; 2024 AA Cambodia Economic Diplomacy Short Course; 2024 Enhancing Continental Trade in Africa Policy Course; 2024 AA Indonesia Contemporary Issues in Trade Policy; 2022 AAI Short Course; Sustainable Agri-food systems; and the 2017 AAI short course; Standards and regulations Familiarisation in Food, Drugs and Herbal Well Being Goods. Dr Gray has delivered other short course programs in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Europe and Australia. Additionally, Dr Gray has been the Course Coordinator and Lecturer for a number of masters courses in International Trade at the University of Adelaide. In addition to these programs Dr Gray has designed and developed a range of online and virtual courses in Economics and International Trade for the University of Adelaide.
Dr Nathan Gray has over 20 years experience operating in international markets, with a particular focus upon the broader Asian region. A strategic management professional, Dr Gray provides corporate strategic advice and international management solutions to governments and corporations in the Asia Pacific region. Dr Gray has worked in management roles in multiple industries; from the health and leisure through to manufacturing and engineering. Dr Gray’s strongest skills and abilities exist in international business and cross cultural environments, where he has extensive experience facilitating international business transactions and trade between Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. Dr Gray is a natural communicator with exceptional negotiation skills and abilities, particularly in cross-cultural environments. His negotiation skills have been enhanced through his professional and social experiences, and have been advanced through his academic research in International Trade.

In recent years, Dr Gray has provided worked as a specialist researcher and lecturer at the Institute of International Trade at the University of Adelaide, University of Adelaide Business School, Nankai University (China) and Flinders University. This has included leading academic and trade missions to China, Indonesia, Thailand, Europe, World Trade Organisation and the United Nations. In addition to his academic and business pursuits, Nathan has been an executive member of two of the most influential Asian Business chambers in Australia. Nathan is currently Secretary of the Australian Asian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and National Vice President and Director of the Australia Indonesia Business Council. Nathan is currently the Chairman of the South Australia West Java Business Council.
