  • Biography/ Background

Dr. Yohannes Equar Messele has a background in veterinary medicine and expertise in bioinformatics, microbiology, and epidemiology. He completed his studies at various institutions, including Jimma University in Ethiopia (DVM), Ritsumeikan University in Japan (MSc), Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia (MSc), and the University of Adelaide (PhD). He held various research and leadership positions at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, where he started as an Assistant Researcher and advanced to a full Researcher position. He also worked as a Research Assistant in ACARE and the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide. Dr. Yohannes' focus was on the determination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria using short and long-read sequencing techniques. His research mainly focused on analysing the spread, genetic diversity, disease-causing capabilities, and antibiotic resistance of infectious pathogens. He uses molecular epidemiology to identify factors that contribute to disease spread and resistance. He is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Animal and Veterinary Science at the University of Adelaide. His research mainly focuses on reducing methane emissions and developing sustainable livestock practices in beef cattle. He is actively involved in determining the effects of different anti-methanogenic feed supplements and biologicals on rumen methanogens to reduce methane production in beef cattle. Dr. Yohannes's research interests include methane mitigation, antimicrobial resistance, microbiome analysis, metagenomics, and bioinformatics. He is particularly passionate about exploring ways to enhance animal health and production sustainability.
