University Telephone User Instructions

Operating instructions

The following instructions provide basic details on how to use University telephones. For further information on telecommunications, please refer to the Telecommunications Services website.

To make a call

  • Internal: Lift handset, dial the 5 digit extension number
    • Internal calls to Switchboard: Lift handset, dial 9
  • External: Lift handset, dial 0, then the telephone number

Note: If you are unable to make external calls from your phone, simply call the Technology Service Desk on 33000 to change your calling access.

How do I know if I have external calling access?
If you do not have external access, 'number barred' will display on your telephone screen and you will hear an engaged signal after you have dialled the first 3 digits (i.e. you will be unable to dial the whole phone number without hearing the engaged signal)

How can I change my calling access?
If you are unable to make external calls from your phone, simply call the Technology Service Desk on 33000 to change your calling access. For more information on the types of calling access, please see the Telecommunications Services website.

How do I dial an overseas number from my desk phone?
